I reinstalled the app last week, and have been shocked to find that there is STILL a complete overabundance of spawns in the city and not a single pokemon in sight in even slightly rural areas. It can't be that hard to increase spawn rates in areas without population densities Niantic. You managed nests, why can't you just set spawn rates around a set value outside cities, with some variation (randomly selecting swathes of land with different spawn rates)? I get that Niantic wants people to visit landmarks, and it's nice to see some new pokestops, but exploring nature is supposed to be a bigger part of the pokemon experience, and no one is going to do that when there is only 1 rattata spawning in every square km outside of cities.
And on another note, add in a daily drop of items for rural players who don't have pokestops too. It's super easy to implement this stuff to pull in a much larger player base.
Edit: A lot of people are arguing it would be technically too difficult to have pokemon spawning anywhere outside of cities and large towns. In which case you could easily implement a system where pokemon are spawned by the client if none are nearby, based on the biome the player is in. The server could then be alerted of the presence of the pokemon if one wanted every pokemon to be seen by every player.
