Are these games the dreaded "rebootquels"? I had assumed that they were going to be sequel games, like "Pokemon Yellow 2", since Red and Blue are established as existing here. But some of the same Kanto events take place, like Team Rocket still being an organization, Jessie and James still being in Mount Moon, Giovanni (very likely) still being the Viridian Gym Leader, the SS Anne still being in Vermillion and so on. If these were just sequel games, it'd make a lot more sense. But then they also have Mega Evolutions and gen 7 Alola forms and (presumably) gen 7 moves as well, and maybe even Z Moves. So... this is pretty damn confusing.
We know from ORAS that there are at least three Pokemon multiverses so far. The Original Universe (gen 1 & 2), the Advanced Universe (gens 3-5), and the Mega Universe (gens 6-present). So here's my theory:
Red and Blue both existed, both chose Pikachu and Eevee, and had their adventure. But with none of the events that we know happened in Generation 1 and Generations 3-5. Maybe Red never really fought against Team Rocket much, never boarded the SS Anne, never helped Ghost Marowak in Lavender Town and so on. What WOULD their adventures be? Who knows? But let's assumed it still happened sometime between 1996 and 2004, but in the Mega Universe. Maybe that's also why Red in the Mega Universe looks so different, even as an adult. He looks nothing like an adult version of Generation 3 "FireRed" Red. And maybe these new Switch games ALSO take place in the past (let's just go with 2005 or whatever), but in a universe where we know Mega Evolutions and regional variant Pokemon exist. Sure, you'd have to ignore all the pre-established canon of "Red defeating Team Rocket in Kanto" and all that was mentioned all throughout gens 6 and 7, but hey, Game Freak really screwed the Poochyena on this one and we're just trying to make some sense of it all.
SO... What I think is, LGP and LGE are not just remakes, but "re-imaginings" (as much as that term makes me cringe) of the generation 1 story, set in the Mega Universe, with Red and Blue of this universe NOT having done the same story and events as their Gen 1 and Gen 3 counterparts (despite all the little hints and nods suggesting they did in previous Mega Universe games). And that these games take place sometime in the past, at least before the events of G/S/C/HG/SS, before they redid all of the Pokemon League, moved it down to be west of Viridian City and not west of Pewter City, added Routes 26 and 27 leading into Johto, and before all of the gen 2/HGSS events that happened in both Kanto and Johto, like the Dark types migrating into Kanto, Cinnabar Island erupting, Janine becoming the Fushia City Gym Leader, Lance becoming the Indigo League Champion, and so on.
So again, to recap, let's assume that these games:
- Take place at least a year (but less than three years) after Red and Blue's adventures.
- Red and Blue followed different events and storylines in this universe than they originally did in Generations 1 and 3 (defeated Team Rocket, saved Ghost Marowak, helped out Bill, boarded the SS Anne, etc).
- Blue, and then Red, probably still became Indigo League Champions, but took a very different path to get there than they did in gens 1 and 3, and might not have even fought the same Elite Four Members.
- The original events of gens 1 and 3 still happen, but happen LATER than they originally did, causing the new protagonists to take care of them (especially Giovanni and Team Rocket).
- This all takes place in the Megas Universe, but in the past before the events of Kalos and Alola (and presumably Johto, Sinnoh, and Unova, too). Like, instead of 1995-1999-2004, let's assume they now take place in the Mega Universe equivalent of 2005-ish or so. I guess anytime after gen 3 and before gen 4 debuted if we want to keep the timeline relatively neat and not too far off from the Advanced Universe's sequence of events.
THAT is my best explanation for when and how these new games happen. And it's probably more than the "rebootquel" mess Game Freak will explain to us, anyway. Please let me know what you think in the comments down below!
