Was having this conversation on the romhack subreddit on a bug allowing the player to heal between Elite 4 battles.
I think it was something that never really made sense for a couple reasons.

Certainly by the Gen 3 games, you 100% have enough money by the end of the game to just buy the items you need anyway to negate not being able to heal. And then whether you even need money in post-game is pretty questionable so you're probably not too worried about spending it.

It just makes zero sense. Yes, let's gather the most powerful trainers in the land and a young, challenging trainer has to beat them all...in a row. Take yourself out of the video game world and either put yourself in an anime-esque version of the Pokemon world or an IRL pokemon kind of world. It would be bonkers. It'd be like requiring Muhammad Ali to fight Joe Frazier and 3 more world class boxers in a row in a single evening to become champ. There's no way he could do it. In no way should it be normal that you have to assemble the most powerful, elite trainers in the world and the ones who are the 3rd and 4th in the order have the luxury of fighting an already weakened team of challengers. What badasses they are.
Just my thoughts. I honestly always liked the anime's version of the Pokemon League anyway, as an actual League and tournament. In the games it kinda makes no sense. The Elite 4 just sit around all day? And before Gary/Blue/Green becomes champion in B/R or FR/LG, nobody was? How does that work? And once Red is champion he just sits around waiting for challengers? Or he leaves? And who decides who gets to be in the Elite 4? And why is it called a league? It's just 4 gym leaders in a row. A league implies there's competition. You're competing against an obstacle course more than anything else, not other competitors. Also can I complain here that Ever Grande City isn't a city and it's literally just a building?
Tl;dr: It makes zero sense that you would assemble the most powerful trainers in the land and a challenger has to defeat them all plus the champion in a gauntlet and the idea you can't heal is negated by the sheer amount of money you have to buy more than enough items. Bleh
